Bruckner: Ave Maria

Ave Maria is often referred to as Bruckner’s first masterpiece. Composed in 1861, it was the first work written after the completion of a five-year course in harmony and counterpoint (partly by post) with Simon Sechter in Vienna. Bruckner eventually replaced Sechter (upon the latter’s death) as teacher of music theory at the Vienna Conservatoire, and it was in Vienna that he achieved fame as a symphonist.

Recorded on 10th March 2012 at St Michael and All Angels Church, London W4
